I made my grand return to Pilates this morning. It felt so good to get back to exercise after this foot injury.
Pilates is something I decided to try about six months ago to help with my ballroom lessons. I felt that I was too out of shape to progress much farther without additional exercise. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried exercise before. I’m one of those people who sign up and never continue. I buy equipment for my home and never use it. This is because I need appointments. I hate phone calls, so if you want me to do something, an appointment is the way to go(darn shyness at work again). Pilates fits the above and so I’ve been successful in continuing regularly up until my injury.
I’ve found Pilates a great way to make my lessons, and therefore my money, go farther. My turnout in rhythm/Latin is better. Squats and other leg work has helped my smooth go farther. I almost have my splits again, which serves no purpose at this point other than bragging that I’m 35 and can do splits. Money well spent, in my opinion. Any other Pilates people out there?
Thanks to endorphins, I’m in a cheerful mood. I’d be even better if I had taken a dance lesson, but I’m not able to deal with heels yet. Dance lessons add a bit extra with the music and body contact/oxytocin release. But, considering the circumstances, I’ll take the Pilates induced endorphins and run with them.
Feet are amazing. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to get weird. I have a healthy respect for feet and their ability to hike, jump, point, flex and dance. 26 bones and 33 joints, plus hundreds of tendons, muscles and ligaments make these movements happen. People tend to overlook feet or be grossed out by them. I do understand that to a point, they tend to be dirty and smelly. Feet are under appreciated until something goes wrong with one of them.
I have been hanging around on the couch with my foot up for nearly three weeks because of a ridiculous accident. I wish I could say I got a serious foot sprain from killing it during a Cha Cha. Or maybe I take sooooo many lessons my feet just couldn’t handle the pressure anymore. Nope. I sprained it playing with my mom’s puppy. Yes, you read that correctly. Playing with a puppy.
My regular dance lesson on Monday, March 9, was technical, but I’ve survived many like that. My Pilates reformer class was a bit hard on my feet, but it’s not the first time. It was Wednesday when I had my legs under me and I sat down on them that my foot decided it was done with me. It’s a good thing the puppy is cute.
Is it bad that my first thought was, “It’s a good thing the instructors were all just wheelchair certified”?
Today I had my follow up orthopedic appointment and I found out my foot has neither stress fracture or major ligament damage. I can go back to work next week and resume my normal activities. My ortho must forget that I don’t pursue “normal” activities. He scanned my chart and quickly added a “no heels for a few weeks” order. Hmmmmm. Bummer. I see the logic in this since I can’t stand on my tip toes yet, but my illogical brain is mentally ordering a pair of barely heeled practice shoes.
Unfortunately, logic must win out here. I need to get back to work first. Then I’ll take mat Pilates if my foot can stand it. Perhaps I’ll take a group class at the studio with my husband. There’s no point in spending tons of money if I can’t function at a decent level. Plus most of what I’ve been working on during class has been footwork.
At least there’s an end in sight now. I can see myself dancing again soon! So look out for your dogs.
I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a blog for years now but have always had my reservations. I’m not an English major. I’m not a writer, nor do I aspire to be one. What if no one is interested? What if people ARE interested? Eeek. Which of those is worse? But as I sit on the couch with a stress fracture in my left foot and some pulled muscles in my upper back, my meds are telling me to give it a go!
As I’ve researched blog writing I was told to write about one topic. I’m going to ignore that advice. I live a life full of popular blogging ideas. I work part time as a nurse (I won’t blog about this because I love you); I homeschool my only child who has ADHD; I attempt to ballroom dance (the only people who actually can dance are professionals); I follow a paleo lifestyle; I read a lot; I drink massive quantities of tea every day.
I hope to use this blog in three areas. First, to keep track of my dance lessons -both the things learned and the emotional aspects. Second, for book reviews and such. Lastly, for homeschooling. There is a lack of homeschool information and encouragement for the middle school years. If I can help one person I will be satisfied.
